The Maid by Nita Prose

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I just read a great book. It is called “The Maid” by Nita Prose. It was an absolutely delightful read and I thoroughtly enjoyed this book. This book takes place in a fancy hotel and the main character is a very diligent and thoughtful Molly, who absolutely loves cleaning. SHe is very awkward and doesn’t quite know how to navigate through social situations.

Through life with her grandmother, she has learned how to survive in a world she doesn’t quite fit into. She is awkwardly naive and has been taken advantage of, but has survived and tries so hard that the reader just wants her to be happy.

In her job as a maid, she is put in charge of cleaning a rather shady character’s hotel suite and in so doing she discovers his dead body in the suite. What follows is a series of events where she must figure out who she can trust and follow her instincts so that she won’t get blamed for the man’s murder.

The character of Molly and the supporting characters are so engaging and delightful, that I found it hard to put the book down. I really wanted a win for Molly and her friends. I wanted her to be recognized and appreciated for the wonderful person that she is.

The ending was very satisfying and showed Molly in a new light which left me smiling. I would like to thank Net Galley for providing me with an advance copy of this book and I most highly recommend this book to all. You will be smiling when you finish this book. It is so different from anything I have ever read that I found it to be a breath of fresh air.

I give it five stars out of five stars.

Happy Reading Everyone!!!!!

Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian

Never Saw Me Coming by Vera Kurian

A story which takes place on a college campus and includes characters who share a commonality: they are ‘psychopaths’ enrolled in a special program which treats their condition. There is a series of murders which take place on campus and three of the students in the special program decide to work together to figure out what is going on. The main character, a girl named Chloe, is also planning revenge on a boy who did her wrong when she was a youth. Of course, because they are psycophaths, there is a degree of mistrust between all of them which they must navigate through to achieve their goal. Added to the main mystery, each character is involved in a sub-plot which is equally interesting. The author did an excellent job of providing a background to the main characters so that the reader was invested in what happened to them. Even though there was no major event throughout the story (except for the big reveal which happened at the very end), there was well-written intrigue to keep the reader interested and turning the page (or scrolling in my case). The chemistry created between the main characters was well written and I cared about the three main characters and wanted to see them win at the end. Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book. I would happily recommend this book to anyone who is interested in mystery thrillers.

The Push by Audrey Audrain

I just read a great new book that has me so excited I just have to write about it. I bought it a few weeks ago, but because I don’t like to read more than one book at a time, I had to wait until I was finished my previous book before I started this one.

The Push is described as a psychological thriller which is why I chose this book. I don’t agree with this description. It is certainly psychologically thrilling, but not in the classic way other pshychological thrillers are. Instead it is a deep and unnerving look at motherhood and all it’s ups and downs. At times it was a euphoric read. At other times it was gutwrenchingly sad, at other times is was downright terrifying.

The characters are superbly written, and the author takes her time crafting a wonderful story of maternal ties and how our mothers determine what type of mothers we will become, whether we know it or not.

The story follows a women who has two children, but shares a different bond with each child. This leads to alot of guilt and remorse and second-guessing. The main character is written with such compassion that you just want to give her a hug.

I loved the intensity of this book. In fact, it was so intense I had to put the book down a few times. It really affected me in such a way that I couldn’t stop thinking about how we treat our own children differently and why that is so.

I highly recommend this book to read, as it an excellent book all around. Well developed characters, with a great plot and an eye-popping ending, that makes you sad that the last page has been reached.

Happy Reading!

Introducing….Me

I am so excited to be able to share my love of books with an audience. I have loved books my entire life. I can remember riding my bike to the community library when I was a child and sitting in the aisles reading until I was told the library was closing. I loved Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Little House on the Prairie. My favourite book as a child was the Princess Bride. It captivated me and my imagination. That’s what I love about books…they have to power to transport you and take you away to another time and place.

Books had such an impact on me that I studied to become a teacher. My principal recognized my love of books and urged me to pursue further education and become a librarian.

So that is where I am today. My children are teenagers, and so I have time to recommit to my love of reading. I can devour books in no time and I get so excited when I am finished a book that I have thoroughly enjoyed.

I started writing reviews on GoodReads and I still do. But then I joined NetGalley which provides free copies of books for “professional readers”. I was encouraged to start a blog, to share my opinions.

I decided this would be a good use of my free time, since a deeply care about books and want to share my thoughts. Some books are great and when I find one, I want to shout it from the mountain tops. Some books are…well… not for me, and it is probably important to share that as well.

So I will continue to read books at my pace. I am still teaching full time, so I don’t have a lot of free time. When I finish a book..good or bad… I will blog about it, and as I become more tech-savvy, my blogs will hopfully become more interesting…..Baby steps for now..

So Join me on my journey to finding books that capture our imagination and our hearts!
